Analytical estimation of Cynara scolymus L. (artichoke) and its drugs

Abstract: We developped a HPLC-method which allows the specific estimation of the hepatocystically active caffeoylquinic acids (Ccs) of the artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) We found a variable quality of commercial available drugs. For good drugs a minimum content of 0,2% Ccs should be considered. All drug samples showed only traces of cynarine. The main Ccs components were chlorogenic acid and 1,3-Di-O-Ccs. We examined liquid and solid preparations of the artichoke and we discuss proper standardization. Finally, regarding the dosage of the drug directed by the Kommission E, a plausible way is presented to find by analytics the effective dosage a artichoke preparations.
