The potential of social science for complementary medicine: some introductory reflections

Abstract: This introduction begins by locating in broad outline contemporary developments in biomedical, complementary and alternative healing. Referring to the relationship between social science and biomedicine, the nature of social science and social scientists as part of society is stressed. The discussion then focuses on the use which the social sciences may have for complementary medicine, identifying the nature of the healing knowledge, its social construction, social relations in the healing process, professionalisation and professional organisation, as areas which could be illuminated. The tragedy of the misconceived research into the work of the Bristol Cancer Help Centre is used to illustrate some important research issues in complementary medicine. Finally, the hazards of professionalisation on the biomedical model are discussed and a new professionalism proposed which would help to transform all healing.
