Communication through Music: What is communicated?

Abstract: This paper poses the basic question of what is communicated in music, specifically between client and therapist in music therapy, and seeks to suggest a partial answer by references to the work of Daniel Stern on the development of a sense of self in infancy. It briefly looks at the need for an answer to the question in terms of research and professionalisation. By a route through linguistic metaphor, the roots of interaffectivity are sought in primary amodal perception, and some conclusions regarding its relevance to music therapy and research are drawn.
