Abstract: Little attention is paid in psychotherapeutic and psychiatric literature to the human voice. Possible reasons for this neglect and the true significance of the voice for human communication and development are explored. The voice is identified as a nonverbal means of expression and a psychophysical medium which can penetrate to the depths of the psyche and affect behavior throughout life. The close association of voice and music are considered with special reference to the (music) therapy perspective. Hopes and expectations in this field should not be placed too high as long as a resonance concept relying on valid research findings and practical experience is lacking. ABSTRACT 2: After establishing the fact that little attention in paid in psychotherapeutic and psychiatric literature to the human voice, the author examines possible reasons for this neglect and explores the true significance of the voice for human communication and development. The voice is identified as a non-verbal means of expression and a psychophysical medium penetrating the depths of the psyche and affecting behaviour throughout life. Consequences arising from the close association of voice and music and considered with special reference to the (music) therapy perspective. The study closes with a warning that hopes and expectations in this field should not be placed too high as long as a resonance concept relying on valid research findings and practical experience is lacking.
