Early intervention: The implications of music therapy

Abstract: Suggests that although various approaches may be employed in early intervention, music therapy may be the one discipline that can enhance and integrate the objectives of other therapies. Trends in early intervention preschool programs and specific uses for music therapy in these programs are examined. Emphases in early childhood educational practices, legislation affecting early intervention, and early childhood programming are investigated. In addition, research is summarized addressing the successful use of music therapy as it applies to intervention in such domains as cognitive development, motor development, communication, and social integration. ABSTRACT 2: The purpose of this paper is to examine trends in early intervention preschool programs and specific uses of music therapy therin. Emphases in apst and present early childhood educational practices, legislation affecting early intervention, and early childhood programming are investigated. In addition, research addressing various aspects of the successful use of music therapy as it applies to intervention in such domains as sognitive development, motor development, communication, and social integration is reviewed. Implications for utilizing music therapy in the early intervention setting are discussed in an attempt to facilitate understanding of its legimate inclusion as a unique part of an interdisciplinary approach.
