Creative group songwriting

Abstract: Describes creative group songwriting, an approach to songwriting in which groups of emotionally impaired adolescents (EIAs) are given opportunities not only to write lyrics, but also to compose their own music. An overview of the characteristics and needs of EIAs is followed by a review of research and literature in therapeutic songwriting techniques and song composition in general. After describing the structure used in sessions with groups of 12 male EIAs, creative group songwriting is divided into 6 steps, each of which is described in terms of procedures and objectives. It is noted that creative group songwriting seems to be especially effective in developing group cohesiveness, increasing self-esteem, and providing an outlet for self-expression. Three group case examples are presented. ABSTRACT 2: Songwriting with adolescents has proven to be an effective techniques in developing group cohesiveness, enhancing self-expression, increasing self-esteem, and developing insignt into feelings and needs, both of self and of others. Songwriting has been used with a variety of populations, bu tht e primary emphasis has been primarily on lyric writing.
