A comparison of clinical evaluations and student self-evaluations of undergraduate practicum experiences in music therapy

Abstract: Compared the self-evaluations of 85 undergraduate music therapy students with the evaluations made by their clinical supervisors. Data were collected over a 7-yr period. The evaluation form consisted of 48 skills divided into 4 general categories: personal behaviors, musical behaviors, music therapy behaviors, and professional behaviors. Results suggest a high degree of congruence between the 2 types of ratings, with any differences being in the direction of students rating their own behaviors more positively than they were rated by supervisors. ABSTRACT 2: The self-evaluations of 85 undergraduate students collected over a six-year period were compared to ratings of the same 48 skills be the student's clinical supervisors. Skills assessed were in the general areas of personal behaviors, musical behaviors, music therapy behaviors, and professional behaviors. Each skill was rated on a scale of 1 (needs improvement) to 10 (outstanding). Student and clinician ratings of the same behavior appeared to be very similar. Only 3 of the 48 behaviors were rated differently (p<.05) by clinicians and students. For 12 of the behaviors, ratings of the clinicians and students were significantly related. The similarity in clinical and student rating indicates a high degree of agreement among the respondents in terms of perceptions of behaviors during the undergraduate practicum experience.
