Psychological and therapeutical aspects of singing

Journal/Book: ADEM, driemaandelijks tijdschrift voor muziekcultuur. 1990; BE. Het Madrigaal. journal article.

Abstract: Singing is a conduct with a great intensity of feeling and is, from the viewpoint of developmental psychology, an older and emotionally more intensive oral form of expression than speech. Consequently, singing is an important value in music therapy. Singing is mostly applied in group music therapy. One of the objectives here is to break through the state of isolation in which a patient can be. In a more specific way than in psychogeriatrics, it also wants to stimulate the deeper individual and community-related experiences. Singing as a therapeutic means is applied in four forms whose contents and gradation of being involved with others or oneself differ.
