Portrait of a Medicinal PlantHedera helix L.

Abstract: Ivy and its leaves as herbal drug are described. Folia Hederae (= Hederae folium) or its extracts are used as effective expectorans and bronchospasmolytic, in pediatry especially. - But Hedera helix has also a very long history in arts and civilisation. From times of the old Egyptians or of the greek festivals of Dionysos till to the middle ages, where leaves and fruits of this plant can be seen at the glas windows of famous cathedrals, ivy symbolizes different characters and wishes: par example joy, a long life, faithfullness. Some further informations to this interesting theme are given.
