Basic Psychosomatic Care: Requirements and Tasks

Abstract: The guiding rules for psychotherapy set by the Federal Union of Panel Doctors, valid since October 1987, schedule for more participation of established doctors in basic psychosomatic care. Improvement appears to be urgently necessary in this field, as at least 10-15% of the West German population suffer from severe psychosomatic disturbances and are in need of appropriate treatment. However, a great proportion of these patients still receives primarily somatically orientated diagnosis and treatment. The reasons for this can be found, for one, in the structure of the health system, which lacks the appropriate psychosomatically and psychotherapeutically working establishments, and for another, in the patients themselves, who often accept somatic causes for their disease much more easily than psychological ones.
