Phytotherapy or prostatectomy?

Journal/Book: Natur- und Ganzheitsmedizin Wissenschaft und Praxis. 1990; 3/10: 303-308.

Abstract: The effect the most usual phytopharmaca (pollen extracts, cucurbitazine, pygeum africanum, sereona repens, radix urticae) have an the prostatic hyperplasia is attributed to the liposterin they contain. It is said that an effect an the glandular epithelium, a decrease of the intracellular dihydrotestosterone and a decreased concentration of the sex-hormone-binding globulin are theoretically to be observed. These theoretical assumptions may be wrong. Latest scientific findings believe that the estrogen metabolism affects initiation and development of prostatic hyperplasia more than the testosterone metabolism does. According to our findings with phytotherapy one has to count with a not yet exactly defined antiedematous and antiphlogistic effect. Placebocontrolled double-blind trials with phytopharmaca indicated an several occasions a considerable placebo effect. We use phytopharmacons to treat subjectively disturbing prostatic symptoms, but it is our opinion that the patients should be advised to undergo surgery in case of significant amounts of residual urine.
