Anthraquinone drugs

Abstract: Anthraquinone drugs represent a remarkable part of the laxatives commonly marketed in Germany. A review on pharmacology and toxicology of these preparations is given with special regard for side effects and effects of (long-term) abuse observed in man. Despite their wide-spread use, today a final evaluation is not possible, and in some cases additional studies are needed to establish drug safety, especially in the field of long term toxicity and on the Potential of mutagenicity and carcinogenicity. A special approach seems to be essential to clarify the harmlessness of use during pregnancy and lactation.
