Ecology-the Fourth Root of Psychosomatics

Journal/Book: Natur- und Ganzheitsmedizin Wissenschaft und Praxis. 1990; 3/5: 155-159.

Abstract: The anthropocentric view of the world, which states that nature has existed for man, has led to a crisis in the relationship between man and nature. The destruction of the environment causes fears about the future, which mainly affect women, as they feel more responsibility for their offspring than men do. This leads to an unconscious refusal of female functions. In the practice cases of amenorrhoea, abdominal troubles and sterility are ever increasing.Today the number of miscarriages by far exceeds the number of induced abortions.Psychosomatics are facing these female diseases with a male vocabulary and a male system of values. The role of women is similar to the inferior role of nature: both serve the satisfaction of male needs. Through the menstruation cycle, woman is imbedded into the cycle of nature; the experiences of pregnancy and birth contain a different concept of growth and of becoming than economy does. Injuring nature also means injuring womanliness. Psychotherapy has got to find a language for this and it also has to understand the real fear and aggression of women as constructive forces.
