Abstract: Recently, international research an the effects of fish oil has remarkably expanded. One of the main questions is the preventive action of omega-3 fatty acids an cardiovascular disease. Several epidemiological studies indicate that the consumption of approximately 20 to 30 g of fish per day equivalent to 2 to 3 fish dishes per week may significantly reduce the mortality of coronary heart disease. The favourable effects of fish oil an serum lipids, platelet aggregation, fibrinolysis and blood pressure are commonly accepted. The changes of nutritional habits with industrialization in Western populations probably result in a deficit of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Since a fish-rich diet is not accepted by numerous subjects the supplementation of encapsulated fish oil except other effective nonpharmacological means might be a significant possibility to prevent coronary heart disease.
