Ginseng (Panaxe ginseng C.A. Meyer)

Abstract: Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer is used in traditional medicine from ancient times until today for increasing general strength and removing fatigue. Up to now, only the roots are used pharmaceutically. Nowadays, ginseng is an official drug in several Asian and European countries. In the USA and some other countries ginseng is only recognized as a "health food" and thus, is not subject to legal drug control. This may cause problems for the consumers.In the last twenty years, a lot of work an botany, chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology and medical use of ginseng has been done. This review gives a critical up-date of our present knowledge about Panax ginseng and will also shortly discuss recent reports about unwanted side-effects of ginseng use.
