VibroAcoustic therapy

Journal/Book: Music Therapy. 1989; 8: 61-77.

Abstract: Describes the field of vibroacoustic therapy (VAT), a means of using the energy of musical sound waves applied directly to the body to produce relaxing physiological and psychological effects. In addition to its potential for music therapists, VAT may have possibilities for use by other professionals, such as physiotherapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, physicians, chemotherapists, and chiropractors. The development of VAT, since its inception in Norway, is examined, and an overview is presented of the use of VAT in the UK, Finland, Germany, Denmark, and Estonia. Types of cases for which therapeutic effects of using VAT can be expected include Rett syndrome, autism, stress-induced depression, and general stress discomfort. ABSTRACT 2: This article presents the field of VibroAcoustic therapy as a form of treatment that uses patented equipment and music software devised by Olav Skille in 1968. Out of his extensive investigation of human musical behavior, SKille designed and tested a Musical Behavior Scale (MUBS)- a nonverbal screening test for observing signs of language difficulties, personality disorders, motor functyions, and learning capacity in children and adults. He subjequently conceived of VibroAcoustic therapy as a means of using the energy of musical sound waves applied directly to the body to produce relaxing physiological as well as psychological effects. Skille suggests that, in addition to its potential for music therapists, VA therapy has possibilities for use by other professionals, such as physiotherapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, physicians, chemotherapists, and chiropractors.
