Journal/Book: Journal of Music Therapy. 1989; Silver Spring, Maryland, USA. National Association for Music Therapy 8455 Colesville Rd., Suite 930 20910 Silver Spring, Maryland USA. journal article.

Abstract: The music therapy profession faces increasing demand for accountability, both in the field and in the academic training of music therapy students. The purpose of the present study was to identify a hierarchy of intended learning outcomes (ILOs) that a music therapy student should develop prior to internship, based on the perceptions of professional music therapists. A definition of the term curriculum was formulated based on the writings of curriculum theorists. Statistical procedures based on probability at the 95 percent confidence interval were used to establish competency hierarchies for an ideal curriculum emphasis. From a total of 138 ILOs identified on the questionnaire, 85 ILOs were identified that would constitute an ideal curriculum. Based on these results, recommendations for curriculum revision and improvement were made.
