Music therapy in crisis intervention

Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1989; 7: 35-39.

Abstract: Reviews the development of crisis theory and presents a paradigm that integrates stages of crisis building, phases of crisis resolution, and principles of prevention and intervention. Music therapy approaches particularly applicable to crisis intervention are identified and illustrated with examples. The process of assessing which crisis phase (shock, defensive retreat, acknowledgment, resolution) the client is experiencing provides direction for the appropriate music intervention. Clients who respond better to highly interactive therapies that are not limited to verbal approaches may be best served by a music therapist who can assess, intervene, and document using the crisis intervention model. ABSTRACT 2: Individuals in crisis can be encountered in every health care setting. Music therapists possess a variety of skills and approaches that can address the emotions, thoughts and behaviors occurring in crisis stages. This article reviews the development of crisis theory, and presents a paradigm which integrates stages of crisis building, phases of crisis resolution, and principles of prevention and intervention. A variety of music therapy approaches particularly applicable to crisis intervention are identified and clarified with examples.
