Abstract: The author took part in the 5th International Congress 'Music Therapy and Music Education for the Handicapped', Noordwijkerhout, August 1989. In this article a summary is given of two lectures from said congress, in which music with mentally handicapped were discussed. The first lecture concerns handling a musical with children of very low intelligence by the American music therapist Lee Beall. The second lecture is by the British Margaret Heal. In this it is indicated how music therapy is used to cope with far-reaching experiences such as sexual and physical maltreatment.
