Competency ratings of applications for certification by the American Association for Music Therapy

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the competency ratings of application for certification by AAMT. Subjects for the study were all individuals who applied for and obtained AAMT certification upon completion of a bachelor's or master's degree program during the years 1981-1987. Data were collected by examining the contents of every subject's application folder contained an application form, a competency evaluation by self, academic director, internship academic supervisor, and internshipsupervisor. Results show: mean ratings to each competency by four group of evaluators; five highest and lowest ratings given by four evaluators; competencies on which the undergraduate applicants were given higher or lower ratings than the graduate applicants by four evaluators. The findings suggest several recommendations: minimum levels of competency in each area for entry in the profesion; closer associations between academic directors, internship academic supervisors, and internship supervisors in the teaching and training of music therapy competencies; more frequent self-evaluations by music therapy students so that they may continue to analyze their own competencies in an objective manner.
