Multivariate analyses of musicians' and nonmusicians' ratings of pre-categorized stimulative and sedative music

Journal/Book: Journal of Music Therapy. 1989; 26: 106-114.

Abstract: 49 nonmusician, female volunteers and 42 female music therapy majors rated 34 musical selections precategorized along a stimulative-sedative continuum. Sedative selections were subgrouped into 3 classifications: (1) Western Art Music; (2) Halpern Music; and (3) Stress Anxiety Neutralizing Tape (SANT). Significant differences between the 2 groups' ratings were found overall and for the sedative, Western Art Music, and SANT subgroups, while none were found for the stimulative and Halpern subgroups. No consistent directional difference between the groups' ratings appeared. Analyses indicated the groups differed significantly on only 1 dimension, which was interpreted to be the stimulative-sedative continuum. ABSTRACT 2: Forty-nine nonmusicians student volunteers and 42 music therapy majors rated 34 musical selections pre-categorized along a stimulative-sedative continuum using a 9-point Likert scale. Sedative selections were sub-grouped into three classifications: (a) Western Art music; (b) Halpern music, and (c) Stress Anxiety Neutralizinh Tape (SANT). Six multivariate analyses of variance were conducted to determine if any significant differences between the two groups' ratings of the 34 selections could be found. Significant differences between the two groups were found overall and for the sedative, Western Art Music, and SANT subgroups, while none were found for the stimulative and Halpern subgroups of selections. No consistent directional difference between the groups' ratings was found. Subsequent discriminative function analyses indivated the groups differed significantly on only one dimension, which was interpreted to be the stimulative-sedative continuum. Univariate F tests indicated significant differences between the groups on nine of hte 34 dependent variables.

Note: multivariate analyses of ratings of music on stimulative sedative continuum & of 3 types of sedative music; female nonmusicians vs music therapy students; implications for music therapy
