Music psychotherapy in acute psychiatric inpatient and private practice settings. National Association for Music Therapy California Symposium on Clinical Practices (1987, Costa Mesa, California)

Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1989; 6: 40-43.

Abstract: Addresses music psychotherapy (MPT) as practiced in a short-term acute psychiatric inpatient unit and in a private practice. The primary (MPT) methods discussed are group and individual therapy using improvisational music, music listening, and guided imagery and music. The goal of MPT is to facilitate exploration of personal issues. MPT's uniqueness lies in music's ability to mirror the ambiguous nature of human emotions. Goals of MPT are established jointly with the patients. Recommendations are made for training music therapists to work in psychiatric settings. ABSTRACT 2: Music psychotherapy practiced on an adult short-term acute psychiatric inpatient unit and in private practice is discussed. Group and individual therapy using imprivisational music, music listening, and guided imagery and music are the primary methods addressed. Music reflects the inner life of individuals through images and metaphors. Its uniqueness lies in its ability to mirror the ambiguous, feeting, paradoxical nature of human emotions. Goals and objectives are established jointly with the paitents. Increased training is recommended for the practice of psychiatric music therapy, preferably on the graduate level.
