Abstract: Discusses how the dream of the young knight Walther in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg portrays the interplay between the principles of poetic diction and the psychoanalytic understanding of dream mechanisms later described by Freud (1900). A psychoanalytic study of this dream illuminates both the points of convergence and divergence between dreams and poetry.
