Sound as symbol: Guided Imagery and music in clinical practice

Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1989; 6: Silver Spring, Maryland, USA. National Association for Music Therapy 8455 Colesville Rd., Suite 930 20910 Silver Spring, Maryland USA. 7-10.

Abstract: Guided Imagery and Music (GIM), a form of music as therapy, has in recent years, generated interest for music therapy practitioners in clinical practice. GIM therapy is defined and described; private practice is recomended; and therapist's qualifications are delineated. A summary of research relevant to clinical populations is discussed with recommendations and contraindications for treatment. ABSTRACT 2: Describes guided imagery and music (GIM) therapy and examines clinical applications, therapist qualifications, and treatment categories. GIM focuses on the conscious use of imagery arising in response to a formal program of relaxation and music in order to promote self-understanding and personal growth. GIM is most effective when used on a one-to-one basis in private practice. GIM may be applied in the treatment of neuroses and depression, in relationship therapy, in the integration of music and art therapies, and with various populations (e.g., psychiatric inpatients, hospice patients). Those least likely to benefit from GIM include clients with psychotic symptoms, neurological impairments, or insufficient ego strength.
