ABSTRACT 2: This case study illustrates the use of music therapy as a means of increasing vasrbal and nonverbal communication in a withdrawn, depressed, older adult female. The roots of depression in the aged are discussed with an emphasis on withdrawal as an emotional reaction to personal losses. Once the resident had developed a system of communicating through music, she exhibited an increase in participation in social activity groups which led to the formation of a social support system for her.
