Music therapy for mentally retarded children: a Japanese perspective

Abstract: The purpose of this thesis is to show that American and Japanese ideas and methods can be adapted and used to benefit music therapy in both countries. The Japanese author describes the history of music therapy and music in education for the handicapped in both Japan and the US, explaining that the differences in history and culture of the two countries resulted in differences in the origin and growth of music therapy. It is stated that Japanese music therapy is being constructed whereas American music therapy has evolved. After discussing Japanese psychotherapy, which is based on western psychotherapy with Japanese style and outlook, and the unique power of music, the author provides two case studies detailing the use of Japanese philosophies in music therapy with American pre-schoolers with language deficiencies.

Note: Japan.
