The Role of Music Therapy in the Eating Disorders Programme at St. Mary's Hill Psychiatric Hospital

Abstract: This paper looks briefly at the role of music therapy as an integral part of a treatment program for the individual with an eating disorder. The use of music therapy in addressing some of the psychological issues concerning this client population is examined. The eating disorders discussed are Anorexia nervosa, and Bulimia, as well as the individuals need for perfection, controll, lack of spontaneity and creativity. Activities using improvisation were found to be ideal for working through issues of perfection and control. Issues raised by clients were further explored through discussions based on: 1) Song lyrics, 2) moods, feelings and images evoked by the music, 3) Songwriting, 4) Stress Management.
