Feelings of competence as a function of the method of supervision

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine differences in perceived feelings of competence from interns who experienced either one of two methods of clinical training supervision. Female music therapists who had passed the Certification Board Exam (n=78) responded to a quetionnaire which asked about types of communication and supervision from both academic faculty and clincial supervisors, amount of interaction with each, amount of time spent at the clinical facility, and feelings of competence in various areas of professional responsibilities. Results suggested a fair amount of communication between the academic faculty and interns in both NAMT and AAMT programs, little communication appearing to occur between academic faculty and clinical supervisors, and feelings of competence by music therapists who are new to the field, regardless of the type of supervision experienced. Similarities, differences, non-compliance issues, and implications are discussed.
