Abstract: If art education is to succeed in the classroom, it must relate emotional and intellectual development through the practice of artistic skills. In the past, there has been over emphasis on a single element- technical skills, self expression or undue emphasis on rendering form. In special education these processes do not succeed, therefore we need to achieve a balance through improvisation. The first primary aim is to provide access to the "arts" students who are disadvantaged by physical, intelectual and emotional behaviour. By improvising with the medium being used, students achieve success, and positive experience as reflected in their work. The objective is to promote a sense of identity and pride through the Motivation, Technical Skills and Presentation approach (MTP). The three elements of motivation, tecnical skills and presentation are further discussed. (Melbourne University, 020692)
