Anatomical structure of acupoints

Journal/Book: Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine. 1988; 8(3): 207-212.

Abstract: The anatomical, histological and electrophysiological findings presented strengthen the theory that acupuncture points have a well defined morphological substrate. Most of the acupoints are sharp delineated perforations of the superficial fascia of the body (fascia corporis superficialis). A cutaneous nervevessel bundle wrapped in a sheath of loose connective tissue passes through each perforation. In regions where no superficial fascia exists as in the face, fingers and toes, corresponding nerve-vessel bundles pass from the dermis to the depth.' The loose connective tissue lining the perforation area is of special interest. This tissue is able to bind water and acts as an ion-exchanger. Therefore it could become inflamed, and there has been discussion whether acupoints themselves could develop special clinical syndromes. Finally, the congruency of traditionally located acupoints with those demonstrated by anatomical preparation leads us to discuss a genetical influence with the distribution of acupoints.
