Prävention aus ernährungsmedizinischer Sicht

Abstract: Similar to the state of affairs in other countries with a high standard of living, diseases linked to problems of nutrition have become remarkably frequent in the Federal Republic of Germany. Thisapplies in particular to dental caries (100 %l, overweight (30-50°.6), the cardiovascular risk factors hyperlipidaemia and hypertension (together 20-40 %) and to a large number of other sequels to nutritional "wrongdoings". In a monograph published recently an a study conducted an behalf of the Federal Ministry of Family and Health, experts came to the conclusion that diseases caused by nutritional "faux pas" have been causing expenditure to the tune of DM 42 thousand million (Henke et al. 1986). One-half to three-quarters of this sum could be saved by suitable preventive measures. Probably this could also be achieved by acting according to "hardly more than common sense", as suggested by the epidemiologist Epstein, who recently proposed to maintain optimal body weight, to avoid excess fat consumption by reducing animal fat intake, to reduce sugar and salt and to increase dietary fibre consumption.
