A new challenge for music therapy: The correctional setting

Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1987; 4: 44-50.

Abstract: Describes a music group therapy technique that has been used successfully with severely mentally ill prisoners. The technique is based on personal agenda setting; guided listening to preferred music selections, corresponding to the personal agenda; and supportive verbal processing. Professional and personal concerns for the music therapist working in the prison setting are addressed, and the need for psychiatric services in the penal system is emphasized. ABSTRACT 2: The purpose of this article is to describe a music group therapy technique that has been shown to work efficiently with severely mentally ill prisoners. The technique is based on personal agenda-setting; guided listening to preferred music selections, corresponding to the personal agenda; and supportive verbal processing. Furthermore, this article addresses some professional and personal concerns for the music therapist working in the prison setting. It also attempts to document the pressing need for psychiatric services in the penal system. ABSTRACT 3: Explores the use of dream, a form of therapy call Guided Imagery and Music (H. L. Bonny, 1980), and the Mandala Card Test (J. Kellogg, 1978) as 3 primary modalities in the treatment of a 35-yr-old female who presented with depression. A combination of these methods assisted the therapist in accessing the dynamics of this client at several levels of consciousness. A case study summary is presented that details the advances made using each of these modalities in helping to identify the S's neurotic patterns. It is asserted that, together, the therapist and the S were able to effect deep changes.
