Systematic investigation of art works: Some research models drawn from neighboring fields

Abstract: Examines alternative models for research design and strategies drawn from 3 fields that border on art--art history, anthropology, and linguistics--to explain how the models may contribute to art therapy. It is suggested that these 3 fields study human behavior and the products of human behavior (i.e., art works, cultures, cultural institutions, language). Societal rules and cultural factors are emphasized more than psychological laws and dynamic factors. Discussed are whether art is law or rule governed and the distinction between law and rules.
