Abstract: Selenium - Essential Trace Element and Anticarcinogenic Factor: New experimental and epidemiological studies provide additional support for the supposition of anticarcinogenic properties of selenium. In healthy subjects, low plasma selenium concentrations (< 0.10 ppm) are a diagnostic index of increased cancer risk. The increasing selenium depletion of soils, modern agricultural practices and dietary preferences endanger the human dietary selenium supply. An increase of the dietary selenium intakes ac a means of lowering the human cancer risk is being discussed.
