Integration through music

Journal/Book: British Journal of Music Therapy. 1983; 14: Hertfordshire, UK. British Society for Music Therapy 69 Avondale Avenue East Barnet EN4 8NB Hertfordshire UK. 2-5.

Abstract: This is a short paper about the teaching of music in New Zealand to children with an intellectual handicap in an integration system with 'normal' children. It is more about the therapeutic use of music, than music therapy. Specifically it describes the advantages of teaching music through performance of musicals and operas, with handicapped and non-handicapped children. It describes the integration of parents, children and teachers moving from rehearsals in smaller groups, to a fully integrated performance with children from different schools. The benefits are shown for the intellectually impaired children in increasing self-confidence, increasing sense of achievement, socialisation, education and decreasing the stigma of their handicap.

Note: Auckland, New-Zealand.
