Music Therapy with Adolescents within a multi-disciplinary team

Abstract: This paper describes the role of a music therapy group in a young peoples unit for l6-2l year olds with psychological problems in the UK. It explains the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in a unit run along therapeutic community lines, and describes the programme which includes small psychotherapy groups, art therapy, family therapy, dramatherapy and music therapy. The music therapy group improvisation method is described in detail with emphasis on musical structures such as role play using instruments, warm-ups, musical dialogues, and talking in between improvisations in order to help adolescents understand their problems and move towards change.
