Resonance and ambiguity--about metaphorical thinking

Journal/Book: Scandinavian Psychoanalytic Review. 1983; 6: 81-96.

Abstract: Discusses metaphorical thinking, described as an ability to experience ambiguity and the resonance of different psychic levels, which is made possible through the integration of primary processes with the ego's structuring functions. The use of metaphorical thinking in theory-building is mentioned, as well as its ability to enrich and liberate through, for instance, psychoanalysis, art, literature, and music. E. Kris's (1952) ideas on ambiguity, on art vis-a-vis psychotic art and his conception of symbol-potential, are also exemplified. The significance of the ability for metaphorical thinking in adolescent development is unfolded. The inability for metaphorical thinking as a defense against early psychic pain is illustrated in the case history of a girl who became acutely psychotic at the age of 15 yrs. The material is centered around her initial inability to understand metaphors and her subsequent increasing comprehension of them during her treatment over several years, as repressed pain and memories were made conscious.
