Abstract: In this article Donald Blair examines the characteristics of music and their potential influence on human beings. After a brief look at the physiological effects of music in general, the author examines the effect of the constituent traits of music: pitch, intensity, timbre, interval, duration, mode, melody, harmony and particularly rhythm. He then looks at various effects of music such as the ways in which music can influence our moods, divert us from inappropriate urges and provide an escape from reality. He concludes his article by looking at the attributes a music therapist should have.
