Abstract: Reviews the role of mental patients' artwork in Italian psychiatric research, as influenced by political and societal conditions between the publication of C. Lombroso's (1888) 1st work on the relationship between genius and insanity and the years preceding World War II. The development of art as a diagnostic and interpretive tool was prevented by the nationalistic policies of the Fascist period, which cut off Italian psychiatrists from international research.
