The effects of live music versus tape-recorded music on hospitalized cancer patients

Journal/Book: Music Therapy. 1983; 3: 17-28.

Abstract: Compared the effects on 50 hospitalized cancer patients (aged 17-69 yrs) of live music singing and guitar playing to the effects of tape-recorded presentations of the same material. Ss were randomly placed into the live or taped music categories and listened to 25 min of music. Pre- and postmusic mood states were recorded on the Profile of Mood States. Additional postmusic responses were recorded on the author's summary questionnaire. Findings show that Ss listening to live music reported significantly less tension-anxiety and more vigor than did Ss listening to taped music. In addition, Ss listening to live music reported significantly more changes in physical discomfort and in mood and recommended music sessions for others. Results indicate the particular effectiveness of using live music to assist in relieving tension and promoting vigor. The human element inherent in live music is discussed.
