The Effects of Aerobics with Music upon Behavior and Self-Concept of Females 55 and Older

Abstract: Aerobic exercises were defined as those which increased lung capacity for delivering oxygen to all parts of the body. The Tennessee-Self-Concept Scale was utilized as a pre- and posttest to explore the effects of aerobic exercise on 18 Caucasian females, 55 years old and above. Thwo other measures were used, off-task behavioral observations and music preference forms filled out by the subjects. The results of the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale showed a distribution of high scores across five-subcategories and a cluster of low scores in one sub-category, physical self. Off-task behavioral observations tabulated every 20 seconds exhibited a low rate of off-task behavior of less than 1 % per minute for 15 days of treatment. The musical selections received ratings of "very good" at least 74 % of the time and as much as 88 % of the total treatment period. General information is provided that may be pertinent in devising a fitness program for the geratric population.
