Music Therapy in Child Psychosis

Abstract: The use of music therapy with psychotic children is detailed in this book. The author shows how to use sound to reach children with autism, schizophrenia, atypical psychoses, and other behavioral and emotional disturbances. Fundamentals and techniques are delineated first. The author explains methodology, schematizes symptomatology, relates child psychosis to the fetal psyche, and establishes thr role of the music therapist. The second portion of the text is devoted to practice. Emphasis is placed on a three-stage process in which the therapist begins by working with sound to establish a regressive, non-verbal communication channel, progresses to the use of musical instruments as internediary objects, and arrives at the integration of the child into the family group. Detailed descriptions of a music therapy session, case reports, and long-term results highlight the discussions.
