Identification of a plant from some dried leaves and stem pieces in asuspected poisoning case.

Journal/Book: INDIAN-J-CRIMINOL-CRIM, 1982, 2/2 (143-148).. 1982;

Abstract: Portions of dried leaves and stem were received for identification ofplant species, in a suspected poisoning case. In the absence of floralparts and fruits recourse was taken to detailed anatomical characters ofleaf and stem fragments applying selective botanical microtechniques.Based on various anatomical features in stem and leaf, the plant wasidentified to be viscum monoicum (Roxb.), family Loranthaceae. Thisspecies of plant grows as a parasite on Strychnos nux vomica tree(Family Loganiaceae) which is a poisonous plant. The death could haveprobably resulted from strychnine poison derived by the parasite plantfrom the host plant.COPYRIGHT BY Elsevier Science BV, Amsterdam, Netherlands END OF DOCUMENT
