The relationship between music therapy and theories of psychotherapy

Journal/Book: Music Therapy. 1981; 1: 9-16.

Abstract: Outlines the benefits for music therapists of using various psychotherapeutic theories as a frame of reference for their work. While music therapy fits definitions of psychotherapy in most respects, it is lacking in theoretical foundation. Behavioral approaches emphasize the use of reinforcement to change maladaptive behaviors. Contingent music and time out from music represent 2 applications of this approach. Humanistic models emphasize the facilitation of personal growth. A person-centered approach might use music to allow the client to express inner experiences, while motivationally oriented approaches might use music as a means of satisfying self-actualization and metaneeds. Psychodynamic models of music therapy are based on music's ability to bypass conscious censorship, facilitate nonverbal expression, and build ego strength. Most music therapists use some principles of reality therapy, which posit that success and failure identities depend on interpersonal relationships. Finally, approaches using transactional analysis as a base focus on music's ability to activate the child ego-state. (22 ref)
