Adele: A study in silence

Abstract: Describes the use of music therapy in the treatment of a young woman hospitalized for catatonic schizophrenia (later traced to degenerative brain disease). At the initiation of treatment, she did not speak, was unable to feed or dress herself, and was incontinent. It was felt that music therapy might help the S express herself nonverbally, while also providing some insight into her problems. Over the course of 13 months, the S came to approach and touch the therapist and attempted to make her own music on a guitar.
