Creative Play with an speech-deficient child:

Abstract: The author reports on play sessions with a speech-deficient seven-year-old boy. His symptoms includes: a marked reluctance to speak, no sentence formation, single word only, and a slight motor disability affecting the hands. The work with him was based on the assumption that exercises in creative play that responded to the child's condition would remove his fear of speaking and his aversion to speech training (as a learning programme). The following improvisatory measures proved resourceful: painting, building, laying, experimenting with the voice, playing on simple instruments, rhythmic reactions, attepts at description. As a result it was observed that on his own initiative the boy put words to his actions and was altogether more sociable.
