Abstract: Reviews the authors' efforts to reduce the chronic institutionalization of mentally ill patients, using multifamily encounter groups. This 5-yr effort has resulted in a reduction of patients from 75 to 60. The most effective technique was animation efforts; among these music therapy became the most efficacious. Each family subsystem became more reciprocally autonomous through family member, patient, nursing staff, and medical/psychological team interaction. It is concluded that family integration into institutional living was particularly necessary with regard to psychotic patients and also that multifamily encounter groups are important to treatment.
