The use of songwriting in a psychiatric setting

Abstract: Presents a rationale for the use of songwriting in therapy, methods to facilitate successful songwriting experiences, and some examples demonstrating the integration of songwriting into an eclectic music therapy approach. Pertinent literature is reviewed. Examples illustrate the creative process used by the therapist to structure a group of activities into an organized technique. The activities and resources described can be used in a program incorporating several approaches, or as an independent technique with individuals interested in the opportunities open to them through songwriting.
