Ethnic self-hatred in black psychotics: A preliminary report

Journal/Book: Journal of the Bronx State Hospital. 1973; 1: 67-76.

Abstract: Describes the development and use of 3 tests designed to measure the relation between ethnic self-hatred (ESH) and psychopathology in psychotic, lower-income, educationally-deprived blacks. The tests include a 66-item Ethnic Self-Image Inventory of Attitudes, a 23-item staff rating-the Ethnic Self-Image Inventory of Behavior, and the Ethnic Figure Drawing Test. The tests were evaluated in a combination ex post facto and cross-sectional design with 35 patients. An additional treatment group was included to study the effectiveness of some techniques used to decrease ESH. These included psychodrama, reading selections from black history and literature, and music and dance therapy. Results demonstrate that the tests did elicit attitudes and behaviors indicative of ESH and that ESH is a crucial factor in psychiatric illness among blacks. (18 ref)
