Effect of Glucocorticoids Upon the Mucopolysaccharide Content of Human Skin

Abstract: From the Medical Department C (Head: Aa. Videbæk) the Copenhagen County Hospital in Hellerup and the Connective Tissue Research Laboratory Department H (Head: G. Asboe-Hansen) Rigshospital Denmark Submitted for publication September 3 1965. Summary The mucopolysaccharide and collagen content of the skin was determined in skin biopsies from patients an prednisone therapy. At the end of 2 weeks a significant reduction in hexosamine content and in the hexosamine: collagen ratio was observed reflecting a decrease in the amount of amorphous intercellular substance in relation to collagen fibrils. The nature of prednisone-induced changes is discussed in relation to the spontaneous changes of ageing in the connective tissue and to the changes seen in fibrosis. ___MH
